did u know after 30 ur brain starts slowly dying?

ik not something you wanna read on a monday morning BUT

it's something that studies predict will become even worse in the age of social media and modern society 🥲

microglia tag low-activity synapses in ur brain and clear them out

the whole process is activity dependent, which in English means the pathways you stop using go first in the queue to be #trashed 'use it or lose it' is basically how neurodegeneration operates three studies worth knowing about: 🇸🇪 20,811 swedish adults, tracked for 19 years. every extra hour a day of mentally ACTIVE sitting was linked to a lower dementia risk, and swapping one hour of passive scrolling for something that makes your brain work dropped it again (published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine in march. first study to separate passive sitting from mentally active sitting, which feels long overdue tbh) 🇩🇰 33,263 people across five nordic cohorts. active mental leisure linked to roughly half the dementia risk over a 10 year window (!!!!!) (it does weaken past that and the authors flag it themselves rather than burying it - possible reverse causation, people already declining stop doing the puzzles) 🦍 and in aged primate prefrontal cortex, the 'eat me' signal on synapses climbs while the 'don't eat me' signal drops. the synapses that get cleared are again, the inactive ones so if ur focus has dropped and ur algo is feeding you a million formulas, sleep tips, jheez even supplements - don't just blame social media and have a detox

(although yes, that will help a lot) take a look into the science first, and educate yourself none of this is about being smarter or more 'intelligent' btw!

it's about which pathways you're keeping switched on - focus, attention span, memory, sleep quality, all downstream of the same thing (neuroplasticity)
